A lawyer and enterprising executive, financier and producer, Michael runs Spier Films. In the past year he financed or produced 5 films including, Kristian Levring’s THE SALVATION starring Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green which is in Official Selection Cannes Film Festival 2014, Jake Paltrow’s YOUNG ONES starring Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult which was in Official Selection Sundance Film Festival 2014, OF GOOD REPORT which opened at the Toronto International Film Festival, won 7 SAFTAs including Best Film and was in competition at the London Film Festival, KHUMBA an animated film starring Liam Neeson ,and Steve Buscemi and finally, THE PRICE OF SUGAR directed be Jean Van Der Velde – Opening Film of the Netherlands Film Festival and finally the South African film.
Michael established the Spier Film Fund in 2010 which has provided equity, pre-sales and tax credit finance to a variety of films shot in South Africa. Films he has produced and financed have played in Berlin, Toronto, Sundance and other festivals while also selling in multiple territories.
Prior to producing Michael was the Festival Director of The Cape Town World Cinema Festival and prior to that ran a variety of media companies.
Heather Millard joined Spier Films in 2007 to set-up the London sales office for world cinema and documentary films. Most recently producing the feature-length documentaries ‘Trend Beacons’ (due to be released 2014), ‘ASH’ (2013) and ‘Future of Hope’ (IDFA Competition 2010, EDDA nominated 2011) and co-producing the feature film ‘OF GOOD REPORT’ (Toronto International Film Festival 2013, BFI London Film Festival in Competition 2013), Heather now focuses on both producing and world sales for Spier Films’ titles.
Also, appointed as Festival Director for the Reykjavik Shorts&Docs Festival, Heather travels to all of the major documentary and feature film festivals and television markets. Heather works between the UK and Iceland offices.
Amy is based in the Cape Town office, working to finance, produce and distribute documentaries and local features and series. She has a particular interest in bespoke campaigning and distribution through a combination of events, television and online.
Before joining Spier Films Amy was Head of Programming at TVF International in London, a distributor of documentary and factual programming. Amy has an M.Math.Phil from the University of Oxford.
Thembisa develops theatrical features for Spier Films, working on both internal productions and international co-productions. Based in the London office, she is the key point of contact for features writers, directors and producers interested in working with Spier Films.
Previously Thembisa was the founding producer of London based creative video agency Devilishly Handsome Productions and has also worked extensively on the production of feature films and commercials in South Africa. She holds a BA(Hons) degree in Film&Media Studies from the University of Cape Town.
Wanjiku Sarah Muhoho is a filmmaker based in Cape Town with a strong background in the advertising industry. She has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Business Administration and Marketing.
She consults on story as a script editor and is passionate about content development and other film initiatives that focus skills advancement and taking innovative New African Cinema to emerging markets and the world. Wanjiku is also the winner of the Talent Project Market VFF Highlight Pitch Award at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival.
Chris works on the development team at Spier Films, assisting in the discovery of new creative talent, the assessment of ideas, stories and scripts, and the process of moving projects to the pre-production stage.
A produced screenplay writer in his own right, Chris’ work has attracted named talent such as Richard E. Grant and Stephanie Leonidas. His latest script is being developed by a UK production company.
Þórður (aka Thordur) heads up production for Spier Films in Iceland. As a native Icelander with an extensive knowledge of all of the locations across the rugged terrain of Iceland he has the ability to get you to the best landscapes and locations with the best service possible.
His skills in producing, coordinating, location scouting and managing have given him a wide-range of expertise in the film industry and he will be first on hand when you visit Iceland with your next film. Þórður likes to take his clients off the beaten track and into the Icelandic wilderness to experience the most magical of landscapes and terrains.
Following a career in corporate accounting Gai followed her passion into film and now has 11 years experience in production accounting in South Africa. Prior to joining Spier Films as financial manager she ran the Cape Town office for The Bank, an advertising agency based in London.
Gai joined Spier Films in March 2013 and handles both day-to-day accounts and in-house post-production accounting for all features.
